OFS Portal’s Dave Wallis Presents at the E&P Information and Data Management 2010 Conference

HOUSTON (Feb 10, 2010)

OFS Portal’s Europe-Africa-Middle & Far East Representative, Dave Wallis, was a key presenter at the 12th Annual E&P Information and Data Management 2010 Conference, organized by SMi in London. Dave leveraged his vast industry experience to discuss the business case for managing Master Data.

The meeting took place February 9th and 10th in a central London location. Despite the current economic uncertainty there were more than 100 delegates from across Europe, and from further afield meeting to hear the latest ideas on how best to manage the huge volumes of data being generated by the latest applications.

The conference included data management perspectives from some of the major operators, Chevron, ENI, BP, Repsol, Saudi Aramco and Total, with many focusing on how to manage and ensure the quality of the data.  Some of the major technology solution providers gave talks ranging over collaborative platforms, managing the people who manage the data through to planning for permanent data archiving. Speakers came from such companies as Schlumberger, Microsoft and Open-Spirit.

“Some of the newer and younger E&P operators were here to learn from the earlier efforts ( and a few mistakes ) made by the larger companies over the last decade or so. There was therefore very active Q&A sessions and networking throughout the conference.  The delegates all appreciated that every data set, whether geophysical, well log or product description had to be actively managed to avoid long term headaches”, Wallis explained.

The presentation Wallis delivered was titled “Exploring One of the Foundations for Successful eCommerce - Managing Your Master Data”, and covered the benefits of master data management, both the business case and the costs of poor data, throughout the whole supply chain, identifying Master Data quality, and defining a data strategy and developing it to reach outside the enterprise. The presentation also discussed the importance of keeping strategies in place, explaining that without a strategy in place, MDM will lose quality over time. The presentation concluded with real life examples and statements regarding MDM from a major North Sea operator.
